16. Alpenloge, Bavaria, Germany
By Jenny Coad
Alpine stays can be cheesy — not this one. Alpenloge, in a Thirties-style building on the Germany/Austria border and in easy reach of Switzerland and Liechtenstein, has design flair. The location is pretty special with the nine rooms looking out over either meadows, the Allgau Alps or the village of Scheffau with its red onion dome church. And they’re luxuriously kitted out with botanical prints, velvets and designer chairs. The wellness area has a panoramic view sauna and there’s a restaurant that makes use of local produce including fish from Lake Constance.
